Get Happy Feet with Wellbeing Regeneration's Footcare Service
The 'Happy Feet' (Wellbeing Foot Care) programme provides an affordable foot and finger nail cutting service to anyone requiring help.
Our foot care officers are highly experienced (we have over 1,100 regular clients and last year we cut almost 50,000 toenails) and provide a caring, professional service to clients.
Why people wish to access our foot care service
Unfortunately, straightforward toenail cutting is no longer available on the NHS and people are required to make their own arrangements to care for their feet. This causes frustration and stress because as we get older or if we have a disability, the problems often experienced are that people:
- Can't see what they're doing
- Can't bend or reach down due to 'the usual problems with getting older', specific disabilities or dizziness
- Have lost the strength, dexterity and flexibility in their hands and because nails have thickened it's impossible to cut them
- Can't afford a private chiropodist/podiatrist for regular treatment
- Are nervous about cutting their nails because they are diabetic, on Warfarin or have a condition that leaves them with 'shakey' hands. (NB: Because all clients are required to have and pass a podiatry assessment prior to us giving them treatment, (which is usually carried out at our own or NHS clinics by the hospital podiatrist or in a GP practice by the practice nurse), it is possible to determine that many diabetics are suitable for us to treat and do not necessariy need to attend a hospital podiatry clinic to have their nails cut.)
The options until now have been that people:
- Try to do it themselves and make a painful and inadequate job of it
- Ask someone such as a family member, a friend or neighbour to do this for them (which can be embarrassing, can make them feel they are a nuisance or simply that there’s no-one available to do it for them), or
- Have to engage the services of a private podiatrist (which is usually costly) and worst of all
- Toenails simply don’t get cut and they end up with:
- Putting off going to the toilet because it hurts to walk so they develop bladder/bowel problems
- Wearing shoes that don’t fit, so they don't walk properly and/or wear sloppy slippers and fall
- Finding that it’s too much trouble or their feet hurt too much to go out shopping, so they don’t eat properly
- Becoming lonely and depressed because they can't get their shoes on or can't get out of the house because it's too painful to walk.
With Added Value …

Our clinics are friendly and cheerful and people enjoy the ‘social’ experience as much as having their nails cut. We also provide information and help on older people’s and carers’ issues, offer support and guidance to the over 50s on eligibility to claim welfare benefits and provide a signposting facility to other services and activities which may be available to those accessing our services.

Accessing the service
Although referrals are received from health and social care professionals, anyone can ring for a foot care appointment and the service is available to those who need or would like help cutting their nails regardless of age or ability; however, the following restrictions apply:
Foot Care Charges
Nail Cutting treatments cost just £6.50. However at the first appointment, clients are required to purchase our specially chosen foot care equipment (clippers and a file) and for this there is a one-off fee of £15. This is a health and safety requirement for staff and clients and also avoids cross-infection. Most people choose for us to clean, individually label and store them at our clinics as:
(a) it's important their equipment is not used on anyone or anything else or for any other purposes other than nail cutting, and
(b) if clients forget to bring their equipment to their appointment, we charge them for a new set of equipment.
A foot and leg massage costs £7.50 and reflexology costs £30 with 'taster' reflexology sessions at £20.
Tips for Good Foot Health
.jpg) Proper foot care is essential to healthy, painless feet, and should be as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth.
Follow these tips to help keep your feet healthy:
-
Try to keep your feet as warm as possible - but don't overheast them in front of the fire! Exercise is a good way of keeping your feet warm and improving circulation.
-
Avoid wearing shoes or socks which are too tight as they can restrict your circulation, cramp your toes or cause ingrowing toenails.
-
Wash your feet every day in warm, soapy water but do not soak your feet for long periods as this could destroy the natural oils, leading to very dry skin. Dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
-
Moisturise the feet daily with cream or almond oil, preferably last thing at night when in bed (to avoid 'slippery' feet which may cause you to fall)
-
Remove the hard skin gently with a pumice stone, but not if it is over a bony area or joint or if the hard skin is painful. In this case consult a chiropodist or podiatrist.
-
Always wear good fitting footware - the older you get the more you need a shoe which holds your foot firmly in place to give adequate support. Lace-up or velcro fastening shoes give more support and comfort than slip-on.
-
Buy new shoes later in the day when feet tend to be at their largest and wear new shoes in slowly. Remember new shoes should not hurt your feet!
-
Ensure your toe nails are trimmed regularly using proper nail clippers. Cut straight across following the contours of the nail, not too short (leave about 1mm above the surface of the skin) and not down at the corners as this can lead to in-growing toe nails.
